Apple’s iPhone 15 series gets USB Type-C, replacing Lightning.

Using the iPhone 15 series’ new USB-C connector, users can output to external displays in 4K HDR. Here’s how it works.

With the iPhone 15 series, users will have the capability to connect external displays like monitors and TVs directly to their iPhones—enabling video output up to 4K HDR through USB-C DisplayPort support. This means users can duplicate their iPhone’s display without relying on wireless methods like AirPlay. This feature proves especially useful for tasks such as watching videos or editing in LumaFusion, which benefit from a larger display.

According to MacRumors, to connect an iPhone 15 series smartphone to a display, you will need a cable that supports DisplayPort functionality and a screen with DisplayPort compatibility. One major advantage this method offers over previous-generation iPhones is the ability to output in 4K at 60Hz. Previously, connecting an iPhone with the Lightning connector to a screen using adapters was limited to 1080p.

Therefore, with the shift to USB-C, iPhone 15 models will now provide an better experience for mirroring content in higher quality.

That being said, certain devices like Samsung’s Galaxy flagships come with Dex, allowing phones to function as portable computers when connected to a display using a USB-C to USB-C cable. The software automatically adapts to a desktop-style interface. Hopefully, in the future, iPhones will offer similar functionality, as they have now adopted USB-C.

The Apple iPhone 15 series is set to launch in India on September 22. The iPhone 15 Pro starts at Rs 1,34,900 and offers storage options of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, starting at Rs 1,59,900, is available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage capacities. Meanwhile, the standard Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus start at Rs 79,900 and Rs 89,900, respectively, and is available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage configurations.
